Confirm your own expiration date and renewal eligibility in the board portal. This guide summarizes the official sources linked below, checked October 14, 2026; it is not a determination that a particular license remains valid.
Start with the expiration date shown on the license record, then work backward through education, practice hours, supporting documents, and payment. A reminder email is useful, but the licensee remains responsible for renewing on time.
Start a specific state from renewal requirements. If the license has already lapsed, check the board’s late-renewal or reinstatement instructions. The correct route depends on the state and length of the lapse; license reinstatement can help locate those requirements.
Arizona
The Arizona Board of Nursing says RNs and LPNs renew by April 1 every four years. The practice requirement is one of these, completed in the past five years: 960 hours of nursing practice, graduation from a nursing program, an Arizona Board-approved refresher course, or an advanced nursing degree. The Board’s renewal page does not list a fixed CE-hour total for every RN. An APRN must also have practiced as an APRN for 960 hours in the past five years, hold an active Arizona RN or a multistate RN privilege, and hold active national certification. An APRN with an active DEA registration must complete at least three hours of opioid, substance-use, or addiction continuing education, under A.R.S. § 32-3248.02.
Renewals can be submitted up to six months before the due date or within 30 days after it. The Board says a late fee applies if you submit more than 30 days after the due date and you worked on an Arizona license beyond those 30 days. The dollar amount of that late fee was not on the page reviewed for this article. Read it in your renewal session.
The Arizona NP renewal checklist is the tool page for APRNs.
Nevada
The Nevada State Board of Nursing requires 30 hours of nursing-related continuing education each renewal cycle for RNs and LPNs. Beginning in 2024, 4 of those hours must be cultural competency. The 4 hours are part of the 30, not an addition, according to the Board’s CE page. There is also a one-time 4-hour bioterrorism course. APRNs complete an additional 15 hours each renewal cycle. New graduates are exempt from the 30-hour requirement for the first biennial period after graduation. They still complete the one-time bioterrorism course and the cultural-competency hours.
The Board’s RN/LPN renewal FAQ says you can submit the online renewal within 60 days of the expiration date. If you sign in earlier, the renewal link is not there. The Board’s currently posted fee schedule confirms $100 RN/LPN renewal plus a $100 late fee, with no grace period. It separately lists $200 APRN renewal or $300 combined APRN/RN renewal. The schedule is hosted in the February 2026 directory but is internally dated January 2023; confirm the amount displayed when submitting.
Do not wait until the last day to discover that your CE record is incomplete. The portal’s 60-day window gives time to resolve missing documents before expiration.
Michigan
Michigan LARA’s nursing FAQs confirm 25 CE hours in the two years before renewal, including at least 2 hours in pain and symptom management. No more than 12 hours may be earned in a 24-hour period. Also check the applicable human-trafficking and implicit-bias training rules; a generic 25-hour bundle may not meet every topic requirement.
LARA allows renewal within 60 days after expiration with an additional $20 late fee. After that window, the route is relicensure. An administrative window to submit a renewal should not be treated as permission to work: confirm the current license status and applicable practice rule before continuing care. Keep CE records for four years and renew through MiPLUS.
Rhode Island, Kansas, and New Hampshire
These requirements are confirmed directly by the state agencies:
| State | RN/LPN education and practical renewal notes | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Rhode Island | 10 CE hours every two years, including 2 on substance abuse. The state also requires a one-time 1-hour Alzheimer’s disease course. Keep CE records for four years. | Rhode Island Department of Health |
| Kansas | 30 contact hours in the renewal period. First-renewal exceptions include certain newly licensed, endorsed, and reinstated nurses; check the exception’s time limit. Renewal opens 90 days before expiration. APRN and RN renewal applications are separate. | KSBN CNE requirements and renewal applications |
| New Hampshire | The RN checklist requires 30 CE hours in the previous two years and 400 practice hours in the previous four years; passing NCLEX within the previous two years is an alternative specified for each requirement. Upload the requested evidence. | New Hampshire RN renewal checklist |
New Hampshire’s row describes the RN checklist, not APRN renewal. Select the exact license type before using an hour total. A course accepted in one state may fail another state’s provider, subject, or reporting requirements.
A renewal checklist that fits these states
- Open the board account and write down the expiration date. Arizona’s April 1 cycle and Nevada’s 60-day window are easy to miss if you assume every state renews on your birthday.
- Match CE to that cycle, not to a calendar year. Nevada looks back two years from the renewal. Michigan looks at the two years before expiration.
- Separate APRN hours from RN hours. Nevada’s extra 15 and Arizona’s 3-hour DEA course are APRN or prescriber rules.
- Pay the board. Keep the receipt.
- If the date has passed, stop and read whether you are in a grace period (Michigan LARA describes a late-renewal window) or whether another application is required. Nevada has no grace period; paying a late fee does not authorize practice during a lapse.
- Store certificates. A blank log is at /downloads/nursing-ceu-tracker.csv, with instructions in how to track nursing CEUs.
Broader mistakes, such as practicing after expiration, are in common license renewal mistakes and getting started with license renewal.
If you want the renewal filed for you
License and certification renewal support is $100 per renewal. The Maintenance and Renewal plan for RNs and APRNs is $275 per month and includes renewal support plus CEU tracking. Self-Service Tracking, if you only want alerts and a place to store certificates, is $35 per month. Those are Convenient Licensing fees, not the board’s renewal fee. See services.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew in Nevada?
The Board’s renewal FAQ says the online renewal opens within 60 days of expiration.
Does Arizona require CE hours for RN renewal?
The Board’s renewal page uses practice or education options, including 960 practice hours in five years, rather than a fixed CE total for every RN. APRNs who hold a DEA registration have a 3-hour opioid or substance-use education requirement.
What happens if I miss Michigan’s expiration date?
LARA confirms a 60-day late-renewal window with an additional $20 fee. After that, apply for relicensure. Check permission to practice separately from eligibility to submit a late renewal.
Where are APRN pharmacology hours?
Confirmed pharmacology rules for other states are in APRN CE requirements by state.
